Many people think that washing painted denim can be scary so that you can protect your favorite masterpiece.
There are 3 ways that I recommend washing denim in order to protect your painting and keep it looking perfect!
3 methods for washing painted jeans:
MACHINE-WASH:
Turn your jeans or jacket inside-out and wash on the delicate cycle. It is a bit riskier to machine wash your painted denim and can cause your painting to get partially get rubbed off. I only recommend using this option if your denim really needs a good wash and you have properly heat-set it.
Use a small amount of mild detergent.
Do not use bleach, softeners, or any alcohol-based cleaner. Alcohol of any kind will destroy the painting.
HAND-WASH:
This is the best way to ensure your painting is not destroyed while your jeans still get fully washed. Hand-washing is gentle and you can manually scrub the areas you want to clean while avoiding the painted area. If your painted denim isn’t extremely dirty and just needs a regular wash, this is the best way to do it.
Again, only use a small amount of mild detergent and wash in cold or warm water.
I prefer to fill a large sink (this one is in our laundry room) with cold water and add a few drops of mild detergent. You can also do this in a bathtub or your (clean) kitchen sink.
SPOT-CLEAN:
Spot cleaning is the most ideal method to protect your painting. This method is useful for cleaning stains or dirty spots on your denim when the rest of it is clean enough to go without a full wash. Use a wet cloth with detergent to scrub the spot that needs cleaning and rinse with cold or warm water.
NO DRY WASH:
Simply, we avoid dry wash as much as possible because of environmenttfriendly solutions. Furthermore, pigments in painting do not “like” high temperature, and it can be blurried after dry washing.
